DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION INITIATIVES

The Rock School strives to change ballet’s accessibility and inclusivity by modernizing norms and opening avenues for participation to people who have been historically excluded. For students with an aptitude and interest in ballet training, $1.4 million of scholarships remove financial barriers to dance training. Scholarship students often create student body diversity that helps others see themselves in a ballet class and opens opportunities.

The Rock School is at the forefront of progressive change in the dance field, modernizing ballet’s norms and opening avenues for participation in historically left-out places. Students are encouraged to wear shoes and tights that match each child’s skin color, and personal identities are celebrated in classes, performances, and self-expression. Sixty-five percent of the RockReach faculty are people of color, connecting students to role models who look like themselves succeeding in artistic work that brings life satisfaction.

RockReach is an uplifting and culturally supportive engagement program that brings dance and music to 12 urban community schools. RockReach works solely in Title 1 schools (40%+ low-income); many are 100% economically disadvantaged. School sites predominantly serve students of color, including 59% Black, 17% Hispanic, 11% Caucasian, 8% Asian, and 5% multi-racial. With 65% of our faculty being people of color, students benefit from having instructors who reflect their own backgrounds. These role models make a meaningful impact on young people, both in visible and subtle ways.

The RockReach program actively supports students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), including those who are nonverbal, on the Autism Spectrum, have mobility impairments, and are blind or low-vision. Currently, 27% of the students have an IEP guiding their education.
